Diary Of A Catfish – TORERA ADESINA

diary of a catfish penastory
I knew it was my turn today
Knew it even before the light streamed through the little holes in the roof of what was our home
Knew it after my best friend was taken yesterday
I heard the stick slam her head
Multiple times
Saw the life drain from her eyes and body
Then a knife was put through her to finish the dirty job
The whole thing was done coldly
As always
The murderer laughed while she killed
Unfeeling
I waited patiently all through the night
Not squirming as the others did
Not even when we were transported to where we’d be displayed
Waited while full sunlight was brought to our eyes
And we were exposed to noise and dirt
Waited while person after person passed by us
But no-one stopped
And then he came

He threw a nonchalant finger in my direction
This was it
The moment I had been waiting for
Dreading yet wanting
This is why I was brought here
Taken from my loving home
I knew the routine
Seen it over and over again
Just as the fifth blow landed on my head
and my consciousness began to fade
I saw a young girl hurry past
White shirt, Blue jeans
Briefly our eyes met
I saw my pain reflected in hers
You and me both darling
You and ——
